Karns Prime and Fancy Foods initially issued a recall of its Mini Dark Chocolate Raspberry Cups on January 30, after discovering the product might contain undeclared peanuts—posing a serious health risk to individuals with peanut allergies.
The FDA updated the recall’s classification on March 17, 2026, designating it as a Class I recall—the agency’s most serious category.
The Product Recall Details
According to the FDA enforcement report, the Mini Dark Chocolate Raspberry Cups were sold in 8‑ounce clear plastic packets, carrying the code number 07851, and were originally packed on September 18, 2025.
According to the report, the recalled chocolate cups were only distributed within the state of Pennsylvania, which limits the geographic scope of the recall but still raises concerns for local consumers—especially those with peanut allergies—who may have purchased the product.
The FDA confirmed that no press release was issued for the recall, and initial notifications were sent directly to retailers and the public via email.
The Class I Classification
The FDA issues a Class I classification when it believes there is a “reasonable probability” that consuming the product could cause serious health consequences or death, particularly, in this case, for people with peanut allergies.
According to Food Safety News, undeclared allergens are among the leading causes of food recalls in the United States, as even trace amounts can trigger severe allergic reactions.
The FDA warns that symptoms of food allergies, including a peanut allergy, can range from a tingling or itchy sensation in the mouth or flushed, irritated skin to life‑threatening anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention.
Peanut Allergies
Health experts from the Mayo Clinic have said that allergic reactions to peanuts can occur within minutes of exposure and may include symptoms such as hives, swelling of the lips or throat, difficulty breathing, vomiting, dizziness, or a sudden drop in blood pressure.
In severe cases, anaphylaxis can lead to loss of consciousness or death if not treated promptly with epinephrine and emergency care.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), peanuts are one of the major food allergens responsible for the most serious allergic reactions nationwide, and strict avoidance is currently the only way to prevent a reaction.
Because of these risks, anyone with a peanut allergy should check product labels and recall notices and avoid consuming any food that may contain undeclared allergens.
What Consumers Should Do
Anyone who has bought Karns Mini Dark Chocolate Raspberry Cups matching the affected lot code should not consume the product, especially if they or someone in their household has a peanut allergy.
Those who believe they may have experienced an allergic reaction after consuming the product should seek medical care immediately.
The FDA will continue to monitor the recall and update its enforcement report as new information becomes available.
Shoppers in Pennsylvania are encouraged to remain vigilant about food recall notices and ingredient labeling, particularly when it comes to products that may pose allergy risks.
